Twice a week, for 10 weeks every Fall, Winter, and Spring, our coaches meet with youth who want to learn Brazilian jiu-jitsu for many reasons. It's a great way to get and stay fit, and it's proven to increase self-confidence, self-efficacy, emotional regulation, and various other psychological life skills.
We teach mainly with the Constraints-led Approach, also known as the Ecological Approach or Small-sided Games. Instead of memorizing and repeating a series of steps for a particular move or sequence of moves, students play games with specific tasks and constraints designed to help them find their own movement solutions along the way.
Our primary reasons for teaching BJJ are all about the psychological benefits and the friendships that grow with the sport.
It is also valuable for self-defence. Out in the real world, the best way to stay safe is always to get out of the bad situation. Make a lot of noise. Yell for help. Run away. If you aren't able to do that, then the skills of jiu-jitsu can help create space and time so you can get out of there.
